Valley Quatrain

A small grey bird, brown in the sunlight,

is building her nest

in the thick hedge between our ‘forest garden’

and John and Kate’s field.

Mountain cornflowers are purple in the sunlight.

Could it be a hedge sparrow, a dunnock?

Sunlight rests on green spears, spring leaves, and apple blossoms,

shining on John and Kate’s field but just fringing our land.
